Tribune buyer already owns piece of White Sox--'Bud' sez OK

"The man who's buying the Tribune Co. -- and with it the Cubs -- already owns a piece of the White Sox.

But Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said Monday at U.S. Cellular Field that Chicago real estate tycoon Sam Zell will not have to divest himself of his South Side interests.

  • "He really doesn't have to because he's not going to own the Cubs," Selig said. "As I understand the situation in pretty good detail now, his ownership in the White Sox is really not inconsistent with our rules. There are other owners at various times who have owned clubs and bought clubs, and I always give them a little time to sell because there's a strain on both the club and the individual.

"In (Zell's) case, that's why they made the announcement. The Cubs are for sale and are going to be sold. He's not going to be the owner.""

  • From the Chicago Sun-Times by Phil Arvia, 4/4/07, "Tribune Buyer has piece of Chicago Baseball Team."
P.S. Not to worry, as Phineas T. Bluster Olney said on XM yesterday, 'Bud' Selig will "hand pick" the Cubs' new owner anyway. sm
